Here is a recording of two of the greatest baseball teams of the 30s playing each other. The sound is a little raw as I didn't want to use any noise reduction or filters on it. The background noises are too precious to lose...the teletype ticker, typewriters of the sports writers, crowd noises, etc. I've broken it into 4 parts. The first two last around 40 minutes, the last two are around 30 minutes in length. This was broadcast over WWJ in Detroit on September 20, 1934 and is (I'm told) the oldest "complete" game broadcast there is. The announcer is Ty Tyson (who actually doubled during the game as stadium P.A. announcer!) and the entire broadcast was sponsored by the White Star Refining Company (Mobil Oil). It originates from the old Navin Field in Detroit. This was the first of two back to back years the Tigers won the A.L. pennant. In '34 they lost in the World Series to St. Louis but the following year they prevailed over the Chicago Cubs and were baseball's World Champs. This Yankee team with a few additions (noteably the addition of rookie Joe DiMaggio) took the A.L. pennant in '36 after the Tigers 2 year run...so these were two great teams. Here are the starting lineups for this game: NY- Detroit- Frankie Corsetti (SS) Pete Fox (RF) Red Rolf (3B) Jo-Jo White (CF) George Selkirk (LF) Charlie Gehringer (2B) Lou Gehrig (1B) Hank Greenberg (1B) Tony Lazzeri (2B) Marv Owen (3B) Benny Chapman (CF) Goose Goslin (LF) Sammy Bird (RF) Willie Rogell (SS) Art Jorgens (C) Ray Hayworth (C) Johnny Broaca (P) Fred Marberry (P) Luke Hamlin (RP) This was Babe Ruth's last year with the Yankees but due to an injury he didn't play in this contest. Also, at this late juncture in the season Gehringer and Gehrig were battling for the batting title in the A.L....both batting in the .350s! And no, I'm not going to divulge the final score . Enjoy...
